The water knows movement The water knows their name The water knows how to transform The fire knows closeness The fire knows their name The fire knows how to transform The air knows silence The air knows their name The air knows how to transform The ground knows wholeness The ground knows their name The ground knows how to transform The tree knows reaching The tree knows their name The tree knows how to transform The ground knows wholeness The ground knows their name The ground knows how to transform The puppy knows pleasure The puppy knows their name The puppy knows how to transform The mountain knows stillness The mountain knows their name The mountain knows how to transform The land knows release The land knows their name The land knows how to transform And I know slowness And I know my name And I know how to transform

הָרַחֲמָן הוּא יָשִיב לִבֵּינוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ לְמַעַן נֵשֵב יָחַד עִמָהּ בְּשָׁבְתהּ, כָּל שְׁנַת הַשְׁמִיטָה Harachaman hu yashiv libeinu el ha’aretz l’ma’an neisheiv yachad imah b’shovtah, kol sh’nat hash’mitah! May the merciful One turn our hearts toward the land, so that we may dwell together with her in her sabbath-rest the whole year of Shmita.

Everything lays fallow We have all that we need Trust in that fills the gaps That once were filled with greed Water flows in bounty There’s nothing now to mine Remnants of systems from Before covered in vines Garden gates are open The city streets are ours Grass is sweet, enough to eat And no one’s be behind bars Unetashtah v’achloo evyonei amecha V’yitram tochal chayat Ha—sadeh

Breathe, breathe, breathe in Breathe, breathe out Let it go, let it go, let it go Let it go, let it go Trust in what's coming Trust in your knowing It's deeper and wider and holy

This time of year when the rains don’t come And your throat is dry with fear And your ancestors are tired of running Hearts beating too fast in your skin And baby I know you’re scared And I am too We’re in this fight together They’re gonna have to get through me to get to you (x2) Cuz I will stay with you Til the water meets the sea I will stay with you We’ll make the world As it needs to be Cuz they’re gonna have to get through me to get to you (x4) Cuz I will stay with you Til the water meets the sea I will stay with you We’ll make the world As it needs to be

about

Shirei Shmita (Songs for Shmita) was created by eight friends and musical collaborators exploring themes of Shmita: release, trust, redistribution, being in right relationship with land, and questioning how to engage with this ancestral practice today. Each artist chose one or more of their original songs to record together in Shevat 5782 / January 2022 on Mohican land at Isabella Freedman Retreat Center. This album is a redistribution fundraiser to support indigenous sovereignty and black liberation, as well as a public offering of spiritual nourishment during this pandemic Shmita year.

All funds raised through the album have been redistributed to the indigenous sovereignty and black liberation projects listed below. These projects were chosen to honor the kavanah/intention of specific songs on the album or to honor places in which songs were written.
